I made this for my latest Number Ones column, to take the piss out of the other meme that’s going around. (For the record, the Ohio Express are great). The Number Ones column is about a song called ‘Boom Boom’ by Justice Crew, who are a dance crew who won Australia’s Got Talent in 2010. It seems reasonably likely to me that Justice Crew are doing a Milli Vanilli. But maybe that’s fine? I also discuss that ‘science proves modern music all sounds the same’ study that’s been going around, and compare Bob Dylan to Coke.

Very good point in here about how the decrease in timbral variety could easily be due to the rise of drum machines and drum editing: it’s not that music has less variety in sounds now than before, it’s just that it has less variety in drum sounds.
